Money in the book of Proverbs
Scripture reading: Acts 16:16-40
-There at least 85 references to money, directly or indirectly in the book of Proverbs
-many worry about money and obsess over it
-get in the way of someone making money and watch what happens
-while money can buy a person a lot of things it can't buy health, happiness, or peace with God
-50% of the world earns less than $2 a day
-As a whole, we are some of the wealthiest people in the world
-God expects us to be wise with the money He entrusts/loans to us
-All that we have is on loan from the Lord, we have what we have as a stewardship test
-both rich and poor have this in common, the LORD is the Maker of them all (Proverbs 22:2)
Lessons on money in the book of Proverbs
1. When it comes to money, put God first. Read Proverbs 3:9
Show video entitled "God's pie"
-Point: God is not to get the scraps
-the benefits of tithing include: teaching us how to budget, proving the depth of our commitment
to God, blessing as we are obedient
-note the importance of the teaching in Malachi 3 as it regards stealing from God. (to not tithe is
to steal from God)
2. We are to be generous with your money and possessions
Read Proverbs 11:24-25. Also note Proverbs 14:21; 28:22,27; 21:13; 22:9
-give to those in need
-the generous will be blessed by God
-ignore the cries of the poor and your cries will be ignored (21:13)
-don't be stingy
3. There's a lot of stuff that money can't buy. i.e a good husband/wife
Read Proverbs 19:14
-money can't by happiness, health, forgiveness, respect, or a good spouse
-Looking for a spouse? Pray. Wait upon the Lord-- and remember: Christians are to marry Christians
4. Wisdom is more valuable than money.
Read Proverbs 3:13-17
-of what use is money in the hands of a fool (Proverbs 17:6)
-additional from Proverbs. Wisdom brings enduring wealth. Wisdom enables one to rightly use
Ask God for wisdom in dealing with money
5. An honorable name and a good reputation is better than money
Read Proverbs 22:1
Some people are willing to sell their "souls" for money. We need to remember that our reputations
and Christian character is priceless.
Don't let anyone buy you. We are not for sale.
6. If you don't work hard, you won't have or get money
Read Proverbs 6:10-11. See also Proverbs 10:4; 20:9; 12:11
-hard work and profit go together Proverbs14:23
7. Money can't save a person from the judgment to come
Read Proverbs 11:4
-Hebrews 9:27 says; "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
-you can't buy your way into Heaven
-don't put your trust in money (Proverbs 11:28)
While money can't save a person from the judgment to come, Jesus can. This is why he came to
earth. This is why he died on the cross as a sacrifice for our sin. To escape the judgement to
come, a person must humble themselves before God, confess and repent of their sinfullness, and
put their faith and trust for their salvation in Christ alone.
Are you right with God? Are you sure that you will escape the coming judgment of God?
8. Get your money honestly and with integrity
Read Proverbs 13:11. Also note Proverbs 1:10-14, 21:6; 22:16, 21:5
While shortcuts are tempting, get your money honestly
The wrong way to get money: lotteries, ponzi schemes, get rich quick schemes, corrupt lawsuits
and the perversion of justice, gambling, theft, cheating the government
The right way to get money: Hard work, careful and morally right investments, an inheritance from
9. Be on your guard, money attracts many fair weather friends
Read Proverbs 19:4 and also note Proverbs 14:20
-Be careful in your friendships
-Watch out for those who are attracted to you because of what you have and not who are on the
10. Be a careful shopper. Poverty will come to those who can't control their spending

-We need to learn to say "no" to our wants and desires.
-Be aware of the check out line, filled with it's impulse items
-Think carefully about your purchases (is it good value, is it on sale, do you need it, can you afford
11. Don't wear yourself out to get rich
Read Proverbs 23:4-5. Also note Proverbs 28:20
Read 1 Timothy 6:6-10, 17-19
Take time to smell life's roses. Enjoy your life. Obsessively pursuing money so you can live a better
life or "give your family a better life" is a trap that steals years and joy
12. Be careful about what you go into debt for
Read Proverbs 22:7
-debt is your enemy
-there are very few things that we should go into debt for (In my opinion, schooling and
mortgages, and in some instances a car or a medical bill)
-Beware of payment plans.
-If the item you want to buy is a consumable or a luxury item (couch, tv, stereo, vacation,
furniture, etc), if you don't have the money, don't buy it. Save up then buy it.
Further: If you have money and someone approaches you with the idea for you to sign on as their
guarantor note what Proverbs 22:26-27 says.
13. A prayer about money that we should learn. Proverbs 30:7-9
"Two things I ask of you, O LORD; do not refuse me before I die: Keep falsehood and lies far from
me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have
too much and disown you and say, "Who is the LORD?" Or I may become poor and steal, and so
dishonour the name of my God."
